Structural Continuity in China- Latin America Trade: The Case of Lithium

自己紹介：山本ゼミ４年生の山本京佳です。高校１年生の時に上海に留学をして以降、中国に興味を持ち、以降も授業やゼミで中国について学んだり中国語の勉強をしたりしてきました。好奇心を原動力として過ごしてきた学生生活、とにかくいろいろなものに飛びついてきましたが、その中でも１番強かった好奇心は中国に対するものだったと思います。その好奇心を深い学びの形にすることができた理由のひとつが山本ゼミでした。
その集大成として、修了論文という形にできたことを嬉しく思っています。

研究紹介文：This paper examines whether lithium has altered the long-term structure of China–Latin America trade. Recent debates frequently portray lithium as a strategic and transformative resource associated with electric vehicles and the energy transition, often implying a new phase in bilateral economic relations. However, it remains unclear whether lithium has produced a structural change in trade patterns rather than a sector-specific expansion.
Using HS six-digit trade data from UN Comtrade (CEPII-BACI) for the period 1995–2023, this paper analyzes China–Latin America trade from a long-run, product-level perspective. Lithium-related trade is examined in comparison with traditional primary commodities—such as copper, iron ore, fossil fuels, and soybeans—that have historically formed the core of bilateral trade.
The results indicate strong structural continuity. While total trade expanded significantly, China’s imports from Latin America remained persistently concentrated in primary resources. Lithium appears in trade data only in the early 2020s and remains small-scale relative to established commodities, without displacing them.
This paper argues that lithium should be understood not as a driver of structural change, but as an additional resource incorporated into an already stable trade structure.
